I present several aspects of how biologists understand the world; their conceptual toolkit, if you will. Topics include: contingency and necessity, the comparative method, mechanistic and functional explanation, levels of organization, time scales, population thinking, variation, and narraitve understanding.
The guiding conceit is biology versus “stamp collecting”.
